My Why: Accelerating Growth in Business, Industry and Community

Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about my personal “why” — what motivates me and what I want my impact to be.

I eventually boiled it down to a simple phrase: to be a growth accelerator for myself, my family, my team, and my community.

For me, that means continually pushing myself to learn and grow, while also helping accelerate growth in the people and organizations around me — my family, our team at McDermott Top Shop, our industry and our community.

That is also a big part of why I became involved with ISFA.

I joined the Board because I saw an opportunity to learn from other fabricators, build relationships and give something back to an industry that has given my family and me so much. Some of the best ideas we’ve implemented in our own business have come from conversations with others in this industry who were willing to share openly.

ISFA creates more opportunities for those conversations, while also giving us a platform to work together on larger challenges facing fabricators.

For me, it comes back to that same purpose: helping people grow, moving our industry forward, and hopefully leaving it a little stronger than I found it.

I think there’s value in taking the time to ask yourself the same question: What is your why?

Your answer may have nothing to do with mine. It might be your family, your employees, the business you’re building, the legacy you want to leave or the difference you hope to make in your community. And your why may change as you move through different seasons of life and business.

What matters is understanding what keeps you moving forward and what you want your impact to be.

So, I’ll leave you with the same question I’ve spent years asking myself: What is your why?
