2025 Great Idea Swap: Collective Innovation That Moves the Industry Forward
This year’s Great Idea Swap, proudly sponsored by BB Industries, brought together leaders from fabrication, distribution, and technology to share some of the
most forward-thinking concepts shaping our industry’s future. Designed as a fast-paced, collaborative exchange, the session challenged each group to brainstorm, refine, and present one standout idea—creating a dynamic environment where innovation met practicality.
What emerged was a clear message: our industry is evolving quickly, and by working together, we can guide that evolution with purpose, creativity, and acommitment to the people who power our businesses.
Innovation with Intention
Throughout the discussion, participants focused on the balanced integration of new technology, the transformation of safety practices, and the ongoing importance of workforce development. The goal wasn’t change for the sake of change—it was about building smarter, safer, more resilient businesses.
Key Themes from the Great Idea Swap
1. Technology as Amplification—Not Replacement
Artificial intelligence took center stage as a powerful tool for improving accuracy, reducing errors, and accelerating workflows. Instead of replacing skilled professionals, the consensus emphasized using AI to strengthen decision-making and streamline processes—from sales follow-up to inventory management to interconnectivity with platforms like Material Bank.
2. A New Era of Safety
One of the boldest concepts presented was a call for a full industry transformation: eliminating dry fabrication across all shops. By transitioning all 4,000+ dry operations to safer wet processes, participants envisioned a more consistent, proactive, and collaborative approach to silica safety.
3. Workforce Development & Apprenticeships
Groups highlighted the need for structured, certification-based apprenticeship programs that go beyond safety. The proposed model focuses on operational excellence, lean manufacturing, mentorship, systems training, and long-term workforce growth. The goal is simple: create career paths, not just jobs.
4. Building Balanced, Sustainable Businesses
From leadership development to smart diversification and aligned safety initiatives, participants discussed strategies for creating stronger, future-ready companies. Technology, workforce strategy, and culture were seen as interconnected pillars of a balanced business.
5. Culture, Connection & Employee Recognition
Ideas for employee-to-employee recognition programs—including monthly awards and peer-nominated drawings—reinforced the importance of celebrating people. Culture-building initiatives, like First Impressions Teams, also emerged as a way to elevate client experience and strengthen internal morale.
6. Strengthening Community Across the Industry
A major theme was collaboration beyond the event itself. Suggestions included improving ISFA’s onboarding forms to better understand member needs, enhancing cross-company connectivity, and expanding educational partnerships and open platforms that support continued idea sharing.
A Collective Vision for What’s Next
The Great Idea Swap demonstrated what makes our industry truly unique: a willingness to share, collaborate, and push boundaries together. Whether through safety transformation, technological evolution, or workforce development, each concept reflected a shared vision of elevating the industry while keeping people and craftsmanship at the heart of every decision.
This year’s session wasn’t just about exchanging ideas—it was about shaping the future. And as the conversation continues, one thing is clear: we’re building that future together.
